I am also a victim. About 3000 EUR invested in 2021. After that, 4 different account managers, all disappearing and not answering e-mails once I communicated I did not want to invest more. My wine was described as sold (with 0% profit) but the majority of money was never transferred. Feel free to reach out Sara, for more infos!

I had the displeasure to be contacted by Daniel Carnio back in 2015 when he was starting up. It was clear he was a complete chancer with no real experience in this sector back then. His early website looked like it was compiled by a 4 year old, full of spelling mistakes and very vague information like most I have seen. All sales and marketing but no substance. He's since jumped ship or been rumbled, but more rats have come on board since who have continued what can only be described as a total ponzi scheme or out and out fraud.

Sky news did a thing on OENO about a mega bottle of champagne. I watched it last week, now private. Their 10 year celebration at OENO house on YouTube is also not available.

Unfortunately I have some wine with Oeno - like all investors I’m unsure whether I’ll get anything back. I’ve got all the certificates of ‘ownership’ but this appears to mean little. Feel free to reach out to me Sara for more info.

Sorry to hear that, Dan. I’ve just sent you an email, and I hope we’ll be able to speak soon.

Maybe this is all a misunderstanding. Maybe we’re just not clever enough to keep up with the genius ex-city types behind the business. But I remember the launch of OenoHouse:

“Iconic wines served at the launch will include Château Haut-Brion, Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Latour and Château Margaux. All of them will be the 2005 vintage, an exceptional vintage, which has both maturity and approachability.”

And I remember the influencer posts. And the high profile team (who seemed to disappear…) and “anti-fraud” specialist. How much did this all cost? Surely it wasn’t just all for show to make people believe the naked emperor had clothes. And somehow, investments here were meant to outperform everyone else thanks to “personalized investment services” that “Unlike traditional investment avenues… curate bespoke collections of fine wine and whisky, making certain each investor’s portfolio is tailored to their individual goals and risk tolerance.” With the critical words that portfolios will be made up of established and “emerging producers”. In “knock me down with a feather” news it’s up there with “David Walliams might possibly be a bit dodgy”

I wouldn’t disagree with any of that and I’d say you’re not so much biased as someone with experience and expertise in the field that many of us can and should learn from.

I may be biased, but I think it has to do with the fact that it’s an unregulated investment, so grifters and incompetent people can thrive.

I also think many of the people who start selling “investment wine” may have experience in wine rather than in investing (for example, the founder and first CEO of Oeno, Daniel Carnio).

To be a professional investor — or even just an analyst — in regulated assets, you typically need credentials (such as the CFA), relevant experience, and ongoing regulatory oversight (for example, FCA requirements). And even then, grifters, scammers, and plain incompetence still exist.

Is this just the first shoe to drop?

Sara Danese's avatar

Possibly? In particular, if a lot of people who’ve invested in wine (including through other firms) start asking sharper questions of their account managers, I’m not sure how many businesses will cope well with that level of scrutiny.

80K invested. Not losing hope and if there’s a class action brewing where all the victims band together to act , please let me know.

Hi Sara, thanks for writing about this topic. What can the affected people do?

Fabio's avatar

I suggest to contact directly the storing facility LCB Ltd.

I have got back for now 90% of purchased bottle.

Be prepared to give them not only Oeno contract but proof of payment.

I hope this info can be of service to everyone!!!
